What are watercolour pencils and how to actually use them

Published 2 months ago • 1 min read

Hey there, Reader!

I'm sure you're familiar with watercolour paints that come in pans and tubes.

And maybe you've experimented with liquid watercolours, too.

But did you know that you can also paint with watercolour pencils?

I enjoy working with water-soluble pencils because you can paint and draw with them. That means these pencils are very versatile.

For instance, you can use them with water to create a painting. You can apply them as a dry medium so that they mimic coloured pencils.

Or you can combine both strategies to create some awesome mixed media artwork. How cool is that?!

So now you might be wondering, "That's great! But how do you use watercolour pencils?"

I’m glad you asked because that's the topic of today's article titled How To Use Watercolour Pencils (This Is All You Need).

In this article, I teach you about:

  • The differences between watercolour pencils vs coloured pencils (and how they differ from pan and tube paints)
  • Techniques and strategies to help you paint with these water-soluble pencils
  • The best watercolour pencil brands to invest in

If you don't know much about these pencils, then now is the time to become familiar with them because they're a fantastic alternative to pan and tube paints.

So if your curiosity is piqued and you would like to see artwork I've created with these water-soluble pencils, click the button below!

By the time you’re done reading, you’ll have a good understanding about the benefits of painting with watercolours pencils.

What's more, you'll understand how to take advantage of this wet and dry medium.

After all, their ability to be used in both a wet and dry format makes watercolour pencils ideal for artists who value versatility in their artwork.

And due to their versatile nature, working with watercolour pencils allows you to develop your painting and drawing skills at the same time.

It's a win-win, Reader!

Talk to you again soon,

Your art instructor,

Miranda

Hey there, Reader! Let me share a quick story with you... When I first started painting with watercolours, I bought an affordable set of paints. There were 24 stunning colours, and I felt so excited because the palette seemed perfect for a beginner like me! Or so I thought... To my dismay, I realized that instead of having 24 stunning pigments to paint with, I actually had 24 chalky and opaque pigments to struggle with! The pigments were difficult to work with because they didn't layer very...
