Beginner advice: Don't make the same silly mistake as me

Published 3 months ago • 2 min read

Hey there, Reader!

Let me share a quick story with you...

When I first started painting with watercolours, I bought an affordable set of paints. There were 24 stunning colours, and I felt so excited because the palette seemed perfect for a beginner like me!

Or so I thought...

To my dismay, I realized that instead of having 24 stunning pigments to paint with, I actually had 24 chalky and opaque pigments to struggle with!

The pigments were difficult to work with because they didn't layer very well due to their opaque nature. What's more, instead of drying with a vibrant and luminous appearance, the paint dried with a chalky appearance.

Needless to say, I regretted purchasing my first watercolour palette because I often felt very frustrated when I tried to paint with those low-quality paints.

Why am I sharing this story with you? Because I don't want you to make the same mistake that I made!

The silly mistake I made was not doing enough research to make sure that I was buying a good-quality watercolour palette that was suitable for me as a beginner.

As always, I encourage you to invest in watercolour supplies that fit your personal budget. But I also encourage you to do the research to make sure your investment produces great value for you.

Luckily, I've done the research for you by partnering once again with the lovely people at Paul Rubens to review a watercolour set that's ideal for beginners and hobbyists.

This time, I'm reviewing a wonderful watercolour palette by MeiLiang (a sub-brand of Paul Rubens) that focuses on producing high-quality student grade art supplies at an affordable price.

In my newest blog post titled MeiLiang Watercolors Set of 52 Review, I give you an honest review by assessing this set's qualities such as:

  • 52 pigments: 40 premium pigments, 10 macaron (pastel) pigments, and 2 metallic pigments
  • Accessories: This set comes with a graphite pencil, a black pen, a round brush, 10 pieces of watercolour paper, and a sponge
  • Convenient size: Small, lightweight, and portable. It's perfect for plein air painting and painting while travelling

What's more, I take the time to describe all of the pros and cons of this palette in detail.

To be fair, I describe this palette's strengths and weaknesses in order to demonstrate why I believe the strengths far outweigh the weaknesses.

By the time you're done reading, you'll be familiar with the ideal qualities that you should look for in a watercolour palette or set.

And you'll quickly understand why I believe this MeiLiang watercolour set is perfect for beginners or hobbyists.

Full transparency: I'm very selective about the brands I work with because one of my values is to only work with brands and/or products that I believe in.

That being said, I hope you enjoy learning about these new watercolour paints, Reader!

Talk to you again soon,

Your art instructor,

Miranda

Hey there, Reader! I'm sure you're familiar with watercolour paints that come in pans and tubes. And maybe you've experimented with liquid watercolours, too. But did you know that you can also paint with watercolour pencils? I enjoy working with water-soluble pencils because you can paint and draw with them. That means these pencils are very versatile. For instance, you can use them with water to create a painting. You can apply them as a dry medium so that they mimic coloured pencils. Or you...
